Funzi & Indosat Ooredoo partnership: what lies ahead?

Tapping into a new market is no easy feat. By partnering with Indonesia’s leading digital telco, Indosat Ooredoo, we have been able to take momentous steps towards bridging the gap in quality learning. We are happy to report some exciting initial results in Indonesia that validate the importance of partnerships in helping to scale access to digital learning of critical 21st century skills.

Our progress

Since the launch in October 2021, we have been raising awareness of Funzi among the Indosat audience via sms blasts, the MyIM3 app direct messages and banners, integration with the Indosat Ooredoo loyalty program, and social media posts. This has resulted in a steady flow of users to funzi.mobi

When the user opens Funzi, their journey begins with the user selecting their goal i.e. get a job, start a business, or improve work-life balance for which we have curated learning paths and course recommendations to best meet their needs.

Similar to our global audience, the most popular courses are those that have been translated into Bahasa: Get that job, Founder 101: Become a successful entrepreneur, and Money 101: Master your finances.

“We are impressed even by the early results of our collaboration with Indosat Ooredoo. This is a new [mobile value added] service category and there is a lot to learn for everyone involved: what campaigns work best? What audience is most interested in learning? What are the preferred payment methods? Despite this being the beginning of a long-term project, the early results validate that the Funzi offering is fast to identify the most interested users and create an active user pool.” Aape Pohjavirta, Funzi’s Founder and President.

When comparing user behaviour in Funzi courses in Indonesia to the global industry averages, both completion and retention rates are notably higher.

  •  Funzi course completion rate of 8% > industry average of approx. 2% of MOOCs

  • +1w retention of 29% and +1m of 26% for course completers > global 6,3% for weekly and 2,5% for monthly retention

"Very useful course and beneficial for job seekers..." Tegar Imani, Get that Job course learner

“This e-learning is very educational and interesting in giving some pictures and alternative paths in products and financial planning, so the readers would have some new insights...” Hendra Wisnu Yoga, Money 101 course learner

A look into the future

Indosat announced their merger with CK Hutchison that officially took place on January 3, 2022 and have stated their excitement to make Funzi courses available to their combined user base of 100 million users.

Globally, there is an increased understanding that people will need to continue to learn and upskill themselves throughout their lives. To achieve this, they need access to flexible learning opportunities that fit their daily lives. Mobile learning will play a critical role in meeting these needs and we are excited to lead the way.
