Students in Lagos State Nigeria participate in comprehensive education pilot: blended learning preparing high school students for work-life

Schools in Lagos State, Nigeria, suffer a high attrition rate, and high schools, in particular, are unable to provide sufficient skill sets that meet employer needs. The Ministry of Education aims to change this undesired trend with a mandate that students graduate with skills that prepare them for the workforce and match employer requirements. In response to the mandate, the Government launched a pilot programme in 12 high schools to kick start a comprehensive education system embedded with critical employability skills and life skills.

The challenge is to ensure that public school students acquire the desired skills at less cost to the government. Mobile learning provides a cost-effective way to tackle the problem. The pilot, executed in collaboration between the Lagos State Ministry of Education and the mobile learning ecosystem Funzi, aims to upskill students to elevate their employability and life-management skills. The six-month program will equip students with skills varying from Financial Literacy, Entrepreneurship, Communication, Marketing and Sales, and Personal Leadership for the pilot phase.

Learning skills online and offline

The students enrolled in the pilot will learn online and offline. In-class sessions are blended with short self-study mobile courses accessible on any mobile device. While digital learning has become a part of curriculums worldwide, mobile learning has advantages compared to most online learning solutions. It’s easy to scale, and students can continue learning outside the classroom on their personal devices. The teachers lead group discussions related to the mobile courses to enhance the peer-to-peer learning experience. In addition, Funzi provides the teachers with a custom report board to track each student's progress.

From dropouts to superstars of tomorrow

The students use Funzi mobile courses in weekly in-class learning sessions with topics covering a healthy lifestyle, getting a job, mastering finances, and becoming a team player. Gamified learning is an exciting method to acquire skills and keep students committed. Learning in small portions leads to tangible learning outcomes and ultimately prepares students for professional life.

As mobile learning is not restricted to classrooms, motivated students can continue on their learning path and keep upskilling them with Funzi’s free and affordable paid courses. They can choose professional or entrepreneurial skills they want to focus on, aside from their formal education. The students part of the pilot can encourage others to expand their skill sets and create a movement of future professional superstars.
